Question 1

What does UL 752 actually mean for a bullet resistant aluminum door?

Accepted Answer

UL 752 is the Underwriters Laboratories standard for bullet-resistant equipment, and it defines ten protection levels based on the specific firearm and ammunition used in testing. Level 1 covers 9mm handgun rounds. Level 3 covers .44 Magnum. Levels 4 through 8 move into rifle territory, with Level 8 covering 7.62mm rifle fire. What matters most is that UL 752 tests the complete door assembly - frame, door leaf, glazing, and hardware - not just individual materials. When we say our aluminum doors are UL 752 certified to Levels 1 through 8, we mean the entire system has been tested and listed at those levels by an independent laboratory.

Question 2

How do I know which protection level my building actually needs?

Accepted Answer

Most commercial facilities across the United States - banks, schools, retail locations, pharmacies, and government offices - are specified at UL 752 Levels 1 through 3, which address handgun threats. These are the most realistic threat scenarios for the majority of institutional environments. Levels 4 through 8 are typically required for military installations, embassies, consulates, and high-risk federal facilities where rifle fire is a credible threat. If your project involves a formal security assessment, the assessor will typically specify the required level. If you are working from an architect's specification or a GSA or DoD requirement, that document will define the level. Reach out and we can walk you through the threat profile for your specific application and help you match the right level to your actual risk environment.

Question 3

Can a bullet resistant aluminum door be made to fit a non-standard opening?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Our standard aluminum door size is 3' × 7', but custom sizes are available for retrofit and renovation projects. This matters significantly for facilities in older buildings, historic structures, or any space where the existing rough opening does not match standard commercial dimensions.Retrofit projects are a large and often underserved segment of the bullet resistant door market across the United States - many buyers assume they need to tear out existing frames and rebuild the opening, when in many cases a custom-sized ballistic aluminum door can be specified to fit what is already there. When you contact us, share your opening dimensions and we will tell you exactly what is possible.

Question 4

Will a bullet resistant aluminum door look different from a standard commercial entry?

Accepted Answer

No - and that is one of the primary reasons aluminum is specified over steel for commercial and institutional applications. Our aluminum ballistic doors are available in clear anodize, dark bronze anodize, and painted finishes, with the same stile profiles and glazing configurations used in standard commercial storefronts.Visitors, customers, students, and employees see a professional, modern entryway. They do not see a security installation. This matters for schools that want to remain welcoming, banks that want to maintain a professional atmosphere, and government buildings that serve the public. If the aesthetic of your facility matters - and it almost always does - aluminum is the right material for the frame.

Question 5

What is a non-ricochet bullet resistant door, and why does it matter?

Accepted Answer

A non-ricochet door assembly is specifically engineered to capture and retain an attacking projectile inside the door assembly rather than deflecting it. When a bullet strikes a surface and deflects, it becomes an unpredictable secondary threat - it can travel laterally, strike bystanders on the protected side, or penetrate adjacent materials. Our aluminum door assemblies are designed as non-ricochet type, meaning the projectile is stopped and held within the assembly. In a real incident, the difference between a door that stops a bullet and a door that stops a bullet and keeps it contained can determine whether people on the protected side are injured by secondary fragmentation or ricochet. This is a design standard we apply across our aluminum door line, and it is something buyers should ask about when evaluating any ballistic door system.

Question 6

Can I source my aluminum doors, storefronts, and windows from Action Bullet Resistant as a complete system?

Accepted Answer

Yes, and there is a real reason to do so. When you source ballistic doors from one manufacturer and windows or storefronts from another, you introduce the risk of mismatched ballistic levels and gaps in your protected envelope. A Level 3 door frame paired with Level 1 glazing does not give you Level 3 protection - it gives you the protection of the weakest component. We manufacture bullet resistant aluminum doors, storefronts, curtain wall systems, punched windows, sliding windows, and transaction windows - all to matching UL 752 levels - from our facility in West Islip, New York. Specifying a complete ballistic envelope from a single manufacturer ensures system coherence, simplifies the specification process for architects and contractors, and gives you a single point of accountability for the entire installation.
