What is the difference between bullet resistant and bulletproof?

Bulletproof is a marketing word, not an engineering one. No glazing or panel stops every projectile, and no manufacturer can honestly promise that it will. Bullet resistant is the accurate term: an assembly built to a tested makeup that stopped a defined cartridge, at a defined velocity, for a defined number of shots, with no penetration of the protected side.

UL 752 sets those conditions and sorts them into Levels 1 through 8. That is why a submittal that says bulletproof tells you nothing you can verify, while one that says tested to UL 752 Level 3 tells you exactly what was fired at it and what happened. How do I choose the right UL 752 level for a project?

Start from the credible threat for the occupancy, not from a general preference for more protection. UL 752 is not a ladder where a bigger number is better against everything.

  1. Define the threat. What is realistically encountered at this opening: a handgun at a transaction counter, or a rifle at an exterior perimeter door? That answer sets the level.
  2. Match it to a level. Levels 1 through 3 cover handgun threats. Levels 4 through 8 cover rifle and higher energy threats. Level 6 is five shots of 9mm at submachine gun velocity, which is why the numbers are not a straight ranking.
  3. Protect the whole opening. Glazing, frame, door, hardware, and the wall around them all have to hold at the same level. A high level window in an unprotected wall moves the weak point, it does not remove it.
  4. Check weight and structure early. Higher levels mean thicker glazing, heavier frames, and anchorage into real structure. Confirm the opening, header, and hardware can carry it before the level goes into the spec.
  5. Get the condition reviewed. One drawing and one sentence about what sits on the other side of the wall is usually enough for our engineer to flag a problem.

Do you install bullet resistant systems, or only manufacture them?

We manufacture. We do not install, and we do not sell installation labor. Assemblies are fabricated to the approved shop drawings and shipped to your glazing contractor or to the general contractor's installer.

That does not leave the installer on their own. Product specific installation instructions ship with the work, and we stay reachable through submittal, delivery, and field questions. If a condition on site does not match the detail, the time to call is before anything gets fastened, not after the opening is closed up. Can a poor installation void the UL 752 level of an assembly?

Yes, and it is the quietest way a protected opening stops being one. The tested performance belongs to the whole assembly, not to the glass alone. Anchorage, fastener type and spacing, frame reinforcement, and glazing bite were all part of what was tested. Change them in the field and the opening no longer behaves the way the test did, while the submittal still reads at the specified level.

Conditions that commonly compromise an assembly:

  • Fastener substitution. Swapping in whatever is on the truck, or thinning out the spacing in the fastener schedule to save time.
  • Wrong substrate. Anchoring into stud and board where the detail calls for masonry, concrete, or steel.
  • Reduced glazing bite. Trimming edge engagement so a panel can be driven out of the frame instead of held by it.
  • Field modification. Cutting or drilling a ballistic panel, or packing an opening with material that was never part of the tested assembly.
  • Unprotected gaps. Leaving a path between frame and wall, or at a pass through, that a round can travel straight along.

What are typical lead times for bullet resistant products?

Lead time depends on the assembly and on how fast approvals move, so we quote a date before you bid rather than after you win. A date you can build a schedule around is worth more than a short one that slips.

  1. Quote. The lead time comes with the number, so the date is carried in your bid instead of discovered later.
  2. Submittal and shop drawings. Issued after award. This is where most schedules are won or lost, because it moves at the speed of the review.
  3. Fabrication. The clock starts at approved shop drawings, not at the purchase order. Doors, frames, glazing, and panels run on different schedules, so a mixed package moves at the pace of its slowest item.
  4. Ship. The ship date is confirmed before fabrication closes out, so the installer can hold a crew and any equipment a heavy assembly needs.

Which CSI MasterFormat sections do bullet resistant products fall under?

Division 08 in most cases. Which section depends on the assembly, and a single package often carries several at once:

  • 08 34 53, Security Doors and Frames. Bullet resistant steel, wood, and aluminum door assemblies with their frames.
  • 08 41 13, Aluminum Framed Entrances and Storefronts. Where bullet resistant storefronts and entrances are carried.
  • 08 44 13, Glazed Aluminum Curtain Walls. Curtain wall runs where the infill glazing is bullet resistant.
  • 08 56 53, Security Windows. Transaction windows, fixed windows, and operable windows.
  • 08 88 56, Ballistics Resistant Glazing. The glazing itself, where the spec separates it from the framing that holds it.

Ballistic panels are the exception. Depending on how the wall is drawn they are often carried with the wall assembly rather than in Division 08, and we can supply language either way.

How do I get CAD details and specification language for my drawings?

Ask for them directly. There is no qualification call standing between you and a drawing, and you will not be handed to a salesperson to get a detail.

  1. Send the condition. Rough opening size, the level you are considering, frame material, what you are anchoring into, and whether the opening is interior or exterior.
  2. Say what you need back. Detail drawings for that condition, editable Division 08 section language for the project manual, or both.
  3. Ask for a review while you are at it. If the condition is unusual, our engineer will tell you what will not work before it reaches the spec instead of after the bid.
