Question 1

Can a window really be both bullet resistant and fully operable at the same time?

Accepted Answer

Yes - and this is probably the most common misconception we run into. Most people assume that ballistic protection means a sealed, fixed window. It doesn't have to. A properly engineered ballistic operable window is tested and rated as a complete system - frame, glazing, hardware, and operating mechanism together. The glazing alone isn't what makes a window bullet resistant. Everything works together, and when it's engineered correctly, the window opens, closes, and locks the same way any commercial window does. We manufacture ballistic operable windows across the United States in casement, sliding, awning, hopper, and single-hung configurations - all rated to UL 752 Levels 1 through 8.

Question 2

What UL 752 protection level do I need for my facility in the United States?

Accepted Answer

That depends on the specific threats your facility realistically faces, and it's a question we help you work through. UL 752 covers ten protection levels. Level 1 is rated against 9mm handgun fire. Level 3 covers .44 Magnum. Level 8 covers 7.62mm high-powered rifle rounds. Most commercial and institutional facilities across the United States - banks, pharmacies, government service windows, school security counters, police station lobbies - fall somewhere in the Level 1 through Level 5 range. Facilities with elevated threat profiles, including federal buildings and law enforcement facilities, may require higher levels. Our engineering team will help you assess your environment and identify the appropriate rating before anything is specified or quoted.

Question 3

Does the frame need to be rated, or just the glazing itself?

Accepted Answer

Both. This is a detail that creates real problems when it's overlooked. Bullet resistance is a system property - it's not something the glazing delivers on its own. If you put rated ballistic glass into an unrated or undertested frame, you have a system that hasn't been tested as a whole, which means you don't actually know how it performs under ballistic impact. The frame can deform, separate from the wall, or fail in ways that the glazing alone can't compensate for. Every window we manufacture is tested as a complete assembly - glazing and frame together - so the rating you see on the certification reflects how the actual installed system performs.

Question 4

What's the difference between a ballistic casement window and a bullet resistant sliding window?

Accepted Answer

The operating style determines how the window opens, which affects which applications it's best suited for. A ballistic casement window - sometimes called a projected-out window - swings outward on hinges, similar to a door. It's well suited for guard booths, ventilated secure spaces, and applications where you want controlled airflow without a fully open sash. A bullet resistant sliding window operates on a horizontal track, with one sash sliding past the other. This style is common in transaction counters, service windows, and drive-thru applications where staff and customers need to exchange items or communicate regularly. We manufacture both styles - along with bullet resistant awning windows, bullet resistant hopper windows, and single-hung vertical windows - all custom-built to your project dimensions.

Question 5

Are your ballistic operable windows compliant with federal government project requirements in the United States?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Our windows are tested and approved to GSA Blast standards and DOD minimums, in addition to UL 752 and ASTM F3038. We also meet Dade County, FL product approval - which is required for hurricane and impact-rated applications in coastal regions - and NYC thermal testing standards for projects in New York City. Because all of our products are manufactured in the United States at our West Islip, NY facility, we also meet Buy American requirements that apply to federal procurement. If your project requires stamped engineering drawings or formal submittals, our licensed Professional Engineer can produce those as part of the process.

Question 6

How much maintenance do bullet resistant operable windows require over time?

Accepted Answer

Less than most buyers expect - but only if the hardware was engineered correctly from the start. The reason ballistic operable windows develop maintenance problems is almost always the same: standard window hardware wasn't designed to carry the dead weight of multi-layer ballistic glazing. It wears out faster, starts binding, and eventually fails. Our windows use self-lubricating rollers, heavy-duty stainless steel tracks, and commercial-grade balances built specifically for high-cycle use under that load. For facilities that open and close their security windows dozens of times a day - drive-thrus, pharmacy counters, government service windows - regular cleaning of the tracks is typically all the ongoing maintenance required. That's by design, not by accident.
