A curtain wall is a non-structural cladding system that spans multiple floors, anchored to the building structure at each floor level. The structural demands are different, the module sizing is different, and the installation method is different. For buildings where ballistic protection needs to cover the full facade across multiple stories — courthouses, embassies, multi-story financial institutions — a bullet resistant curtain wall is the appropriate specification. How do I know which UL 752 protection level my building actually needs?

UL 752 defines 10 protection levels based on the type of threat — caliber, bullet weight, velocity, and number of shots. Level 1 covers 9mm handgun threats. Level 3 covers .44 Magnum. Level 4 moves into rifle territory with .30 caliber rounds. Level 8 covers 7.62mm rifle fire. Level 10 addresses .50 caliber BMG. The right level depends on your threat assessment — the realistic threats your facility faces based on its location, function, and occupancy. A retail bank in a commercial district has a different profile than a federal courthouse or a diplomatic facility. Does bullet resistant glass look different from standard architectural glass?

Modern high-optical-clarity ballistic glazing is visually comparable to standard glass in most applications. The one thing worth understanding is that large ballistic glass panes — particularly those around 8 feet in length — can experience minor warping due to the lamination process used to build up the ballistic layers. This is a known characteristic of the material, not a defect. Our fully framed curtain wall system design accounts for this: the framing holds the glazing in a way that minimizes the visual impact of any lamination-related warping. Additionally, ballistic glass panes are typically limited to around 6 feet in width by autoclave manufacturing constraints — a factor we build into the curtain wall module sizing during the engineering phase so it doesn't become a field problem.

Yes — and for many facilities across the United States, that combination is exactly what's required. Our aluminum curtain wall systems are rated for medium-level blast resistance alongside their UL 752 ballistic certification. For government buildings, courthouses, embassies, and high-security commercial facilities operating under GSA P100, DOD, or DOS requirements, multi-threat performance isn't optional — it's mandated. Getting both ballistic and blast protection from a single integrated system means fewer coordination issues, fewer vendors, and a single point of accountability for the performance of your building envelope. The system is also tested to ASTM E 283 for air infiltration, ASTM E 331 for water resistance, and ASTM E 330 for structural load at 105 PSF positive and negative — so it performs as a complete architectural system, not just a security barrier.

Is there a difference between "bulletproof" and "bullet resistant" — and does it matter?

It matters more than most people realize. There is no such thing as a bulletproof system. UL 752 — the governing U.S. standard for ballistic architectural products — defines performance as "bullet resistant," meaning the system prevents complete penetration by a bullet or bullet fragment and prevents spalling on the protected side sufficient to injure someone standing behind it. A system rated to stop a 9mm (Level 1) will not stop a .30 caliber rifle round (Level 4). A Level 4 system will not stop .50 caliber BMG (Level 10). The level matters, the threat matters, and the terminology matters — because "bulletproof" creates a false sense of absolute protection that no product can honestly claim. We use "bullet resistant" because that's what the standard says and what the product actually delivers.
